New Delhi, October 24: The BJP on Saturday questioned the Congress’s decision to hold a rally in Delhi on November 1, citing concerns over disruption to business during the festive season.
Speaking at the party headquarters, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Chamber of Trade and Industry had written to Rahul Gandhi, requesting that the gathering be postponed. He accused the Congress leader of overlooking the difficulties traders and residents could face. Prasad also expressed concern about possible disorder during the event.
The traders’ body has sought a fresh date after November 10, arguing that the days before Diwali are crucial for business. It warned that the proposed gathering at Ramlila Maidan could disrupt shopping and access to nearby markets.
The BJP also objected to the timing of the rally because November 1 is associated with the 1984 anti-Sikh violence. It alleged that holding a political gathering on that date showed insensitivity towards the Sikh community.
Congress leaders, meanwhile, have been preparing for the rally as part of their campaign against alleged electoral irregularities. The party has been mobilising supporters to raise questions about the electoral process.
