Srinagar, October 24: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday claimed that Pakistan’s repeated references to Kashmir at international forums had kept the issue alive and helped protect the interests of Kashmiris.
Addressing party workers in Baramulla, the former chief minister questioned whether people in Jammu and Kashmir could expect justice from New Delhi. He urged them to remain firm in defending their identity and rights, alleging that the Centre’s intentions towards the region were questionable.
Abdullah also maintained that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had never rejected their Indian identity. Referring to Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, he said their commitment was to an inclusive India. He criticised the use of religious divisions for political power.
His remarks drew a sharp response from the BJP. Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Sat Sharma demanded an apology, while party leaders rejected Abdullah’s portrayal of Pakistan’s role and defended the Centre’s policies in the region.
