New Delhi, October 24: State Bank of India has sought to reassure customers following a suspected exposure of personal information, saying their money and account balances remain safe.
The bank said it had contacted customers whose information was identified in the incident, sending individual notifications through email or WhatsApp.
An initial review of approximately 3.75 lakh records found on the dark web identified 3,897 records containing personal customer details. These reportedly included names, registered mobile numbers, birth dates, email addresses, residential addresses and some customer and loan-related information. Investigators are still examining the source, authenticity and extent of the suspected leak.
SBI has brought in an independent cybersecurity agency to assess the incident. The lender said it did not expect any material impact on its core banking operations, financial performance or business continuity.
The bank also urged customers to be cautious when responding to calls, messages or emails seeking banking details. It advised them never to disclose OTPs, PINs or passwords and to follow safe digital banking practices.
