Washington, November 5: President Donald Trump has conceded that the economic consequences of the Iran conflict, particularly higher fuel prices, affected Republican prospects in the US midterm elections.
Despite the losses, Trump defended the campaign as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also rejected the suggestion that the election amounted to a personal rejection of his presidency, pointing out that he was not on the ballot.
Vice-President JD Vance offered a sharper assessment, identifying the war as the reason for the Republican defeat. Democrats’ return to control of Congress will strengthen their ability to scrutinise the administration and challenge its legislative priorities.
