Chandigarh: The Punjab State Red Cross has sent around 52 tonnes of relief material to Nepal to help people affected by the recent floods and flash floods. The assistance includes essential supplies that can be used by families who have lost homes, belongings and access to basic necessities.
The relief material was collected and arranged by the Punjab Red Cross after discussions with the Nepal Red Cross about the needs of people in the flood-hit areas. The supplies include food and ration items, clothes and other essential materials required during the relief operation.
Punjab Governor and President of the Punjab State Red Cross, Gulab Chand Kataria, flagged off the relief trucks from Chandigarh. The first consignment was sent on September 1, with three trucks carrying material worth more than Rs 10 lakh.
The relief operation was later expanded, with another consignment worth around Rs 38 lakh being prepared and sent to Nepal. The Punjab Red Cross said the assistance is being coordinated with the Nepal Red Cross so that the material can reach people in areas where the need is greatest.
The floods have caused extensive damage in several parts of Nepal, affecting families and disrupting normal life. Many people have been forced to leave their homes, while local authorities and relief organisations continue to work on rescue, food distribution and other emergency needs.
Officials said the Punjab Red Cross will remain in touch with its counterparts in Nepal and will consider sending further assistance if more supplies are required. The organisation said the relief effort reflects Punjab’s support for people facing hardship across the border.
The consignment is expected to provide immediate support to affected families as Nepal continues its relief and recovery work following the floods.
